i had this check the earth on the fuel gauge itself if it is an early gauge
the do not have a tag for a spade to connect to earth i got round this by
using a ring terminal on one of the little screws on the back of the bulb
cluster early cars did rely on actuall components tuching the body where
poss putting in actuall fixed wires has rid me of a few strange twitches
