Test the oil pressure at idle (around 8 psi) and around 2,500 rpm (around
30 psi).  That will tell you if you have an oil pressure problem.  Timing,
valves etc won't cure it - only an engine overhaul will do that.
Or buy a new oil pressure switch, and see if it stops doing it.  Maybe the
switch is faulty, though I would expect it to become less likely to come on
as the spring weakens rather than more likely.  Some switches have
different ranges.  I think 5 - 8 psi is the range needed for these.

VW service literature says the oil light can flicker at idle, but should go
out as you speed up.  A slow idle makes this more likely, but yours is
correct.

Are you getting any deep rumbling or clonking noises at idle, which would
indicate there is too much bearing wear?
