I need some help passing the smog test here in Washington state. Yeah right,...I know they passed a new law that exempts my 71 square., but that starts after the millenium and not a moment sooner according to the greedy tax collectors. I, meanwhile, am driving on expired tabs,... and after a contriversial refferendum just passed here giving us $30.00 a year tabs, but took millions of dollars from law enforcement, (pissing them off), encouraging many to wait untill after the new law takes effect, (Jan. 1st), to renew thier tabs; further screwing the state for money thus, further pissing off the cops....anyway. I can't afford to get caught, but I can't buy my tabs unless I pass. So here's the deal. I flunked the first test with dual weber 34's. I put stock solex 32's on from an older model and almost passed. After flunking twice here in this state, you can get a waiver if you spend $100.00 at a certified shop, and have an improved reading, and,...OH S*%# A VISUAL INSPECTION! Instant flunk with my non stock, non fuel injected, tampered with vehicle. Washington state hates carbs, hates dark, and I'm suprized they have'nt been more involved in the carb vs. injection and dark vs. stock threads here on the list! So I need to pass hands down and hatch down! Here are my current results: CRUISE HC/ppm=0083 limit=0900 CO%=00.73 limit=06.00 CO+CO2%=13.58 IDLE HC/ppm=1185 limit=0900 CO%=00.16 limit=06.00 CO+CO2%=07.51 I passed all but the HC @ idle. The test allows up to 1100 rpm idle speed during the test. The last results shown above, the idle was at 651rpm. A mechanic I spoke with told me to retake the test, but with the idle as close to the max level as possible. Sound right? Do I need to close or open the idle/air screw? What (that I can adjust) controls the Hydrocarbon levels? Once I pass can I show them my exhaust outlet and remind them they will never stick thier probe into it again?
