Yup, the plate can shift, it happened to me. it's easy to fix, the bolts are right under the carpet. First jack up the rear though and make sure the shift coupler set screw hasn't come loose, it's under a small cover right ahead of the tranny, three dinky slotted head screws hold it on. Make sure you don't lose them or tear the gasket anymore than it already is. I had a cheap aftermarket coupler once, the setscrew wallowed out and I had shifting problems, then it completely dropped out and I was stuck in second a long way from home. Check to make sure it's fully engaged and the tie-wire is still present before messing with the shifter plate. And then, of course, the tranny might be just worn out, too. Check the cheap stuff first, though. The bit with it trying to enter reverse does make it sound like the shifter plate has moved, though. If you didn't scribe the current position when taking it out one time, it'll be fun trying to get it back. Trial and error is what I had to do.
