You should check the shift rod bushing in the tunnel just behind the shift lever and plate; likewise, check to see if the shift rod coupling is loose or damaged. Both can make for sloppy shift positions. Also check the front tranny rubber mount as this can allow the tranny to move a bit, thus pulling it out of gear. You can adjust the shift position pattern somewhat by moving the shift plate around on the tunnel. If it still pops out of gear then the problem is likely to be internal to the tranny. There is a fairly common problem that occurs there that is rather easy to fix, but hard to get to since the whole tranny must be disassembled to get there. This is quite an advanced job.
