The symptoms you describe suggest two things. 1) one or both return springs have lost tension. This will cause the butterflies to flutter and open prematurely after you think theyve been adjusted correctly. Conversely if you try to compensate by adjusting the covers to avoid this fluttering the car will run rich and the idle will be way too high. 2) The fast idle links are incorrectly adjusted. Look where the small nuts sit on the link rods. Are they about 1/8`` down the rods? This is generally where they should be. The choke levers should be on the upper-most steps of the choke cams. You may be experiencing one or both of the above problems. My car had the same symptons you describe. I retensioned the return springs and adjusted the fast idle links and now at a dead cold start the car idles smoothly at about 750 rpm, gradually dropping to 650 when warm. These solexs aren't the greatest carbs around but correctly adjusted they work fine. Don '73 sb.
