well i must say i've never had so many frustrating experiences related to any car in my life. my square is really testing my patience. i'm tired of dealing with the starting situation, so now i disconnect the ground strap on the battery every time the car will be sitting for awhile. and it works. go figure. as far as i can tell there's no shorts but its the only thing that assures my car will start right up in the morning. here's the other problem, one that is quite perplexing and yet very scary also, thanks to some of you who were quite successful in scaring the crap out of me with your horror stories... anyway it has to do with that sound, the tapping sound in my engine. it never happens in the morning on my first drive of the day. but after that, once the engine has been run, it happens regularly. it doesn't happen at idle, only when i'm accelerating. and it doesn't matter if its low or high rpms, under load or not. its very random. i'm running 92 octane exon gas, that's the best stuff we have around here. now i looked at the idiot manual for some diagnosis, and i think i can count out rod knock since he assocites this with letting off the gas going uphill. my car only makes noise when the gas is ON. he also mentions the main bearings, but i don't hear that noise. yes, i do have a beat engine. the oil light flickers at idle when it gets real hot, but it does go away. i'm just trying to get through the winter, and i only need to drive the car daily to school and back, a weekly total of maybe 50-75 miles. so, my plan is to do a whole tuneup and oil change on saturday. then i'll see if the noise goes away. another question, this seems really dumb on my part but what the hell. the last time i did my valves i remember being a little confused. i have a 1970 fi square. according to muir, after doing #1 "rotate the engine counterclockwise until you come to the next timing mark", which for me is the one in the center of the 3. but....i only have to rotate my engine maybe a couple of inches counterclockwise to hit this mark. so do i do the valves then, or do i go past the mark and around another 180 and do it? cause both methods yield different results...i forget what i ended up doing... and one last thing...could my engine noise have anything to do with the fact that my oil is really really beat, as in black, very runny, and very full of gas? just wondering.... thanks for all the help so far guys...maybe sometime soon i can make it through a week without car trouble, but until then i'm counting on feedback from you guys!!!!!! mark. 70 square fi. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------- Search old messages on the Web!
