I suspect that the cranked end is not pivoting freely in the roller
arm. There must be a burr on one side of the hole. Use a drill bit
much larger than the hole to clean off this burr, and verify that the
parts pivot freely so that the cable is not asked to flex AT ALL as
the pedal is depressed.
You should be able to make this problem completely disappear!
