Beware, it's a disease ;-) The right lever is the master heat control; it controls the 2 heat exchanger valves back at the front of the engine. It sounds like one or both of yours may be stuck or misadjusted back there. You will need to get under the car and watch these while someone works the lever from above. The left lever (down is off) controls heat into the rear footwell. The footwell sliders just open and close (down is closed) the front footwell heat vents. The knobs on the dash do not control heat at all, only fresh air.
