I would avoid solvents because they might be hard on the rubber. Dirt 
will wash off with soap and warm water.

Usually you can rub with your fingers or scrape with a piece of wood. 
These may work on the "new" seals, too.  If you try a solvent, make 
sure that it doesn't take off your paint.

3-M weatherstrip adhesive works very well. I don't know if you can 
get it "down under."

Avoid all petroleum products. Silicone sprays are good.
