Every year Consumer Reports tests a bunch of cars and reports on them. In 1967 they tested a 67 beetle and found that its brakes were the best they had ever tested (for stopping distance and lack of fade.) That car held the CR record for more than 10 years, and it had 4 wheel drum brakes. The brakes on a type 3 with disk brakes are even better. The rear engine allows us to take advantage of good brakes on the rear wheels, too. Any car with a front engine has so much weight on the front wheels that the rear wheels will lock up if the brakes there are too good. It is likely that you have to get into something like a 911 to get better brakes.
