[T3] Heat (long)

Well, well. What a weekend.

This is long, and I apologise in advance.

Firstly, I want to thank Vader (Brian Fye - at least I think it was he) for
his extraordinary tip. He mentioned that one should save one's old
induction tube hoses from your FI when replacing them, to use them as drifts
to help seat the new ones without damaging them. Extraordinary idea.
Probably the sharpest tip I've gotten in years. Very clever.

So. I've been trying to get my car to cool down, so I can drive her to fun
places. I finally got the o-rings and *correct* (read: bakelite and paper)
gaskets.

Replaced remaining fuel line, reset dwell, checked timing, new induction
tube hoses, new intake gaskets, new infector o-rings (large and small).
Buzzed all surfaces with the Dremel drill and wire brush to be sure they
were nice and clean and smooth. Buttoned her all back up, and she went
*voom*! *Never* ran so good. Ripping around like a new car. I *loved* it.

So, that being said, I headed off for Flagstaff (a 360 mile round trip) B&E
Saturday morn. Boy. I'm on I-17, and whoopin' along; thinking to myself,
'I've never heard the motor hum like that, what is that?' and I look down,
and I'm churning along at 85 mph, with pedal all day long. I'm stunned. I
don't even know what to do. So, just to be on the safe side, at the first
little town outside of Phoenix (about 55 miles, right at the top of the
first 'hill;' about 4000'). Engine stalls. Won't start.

Whip o>{4ap, and have to re-re-adjust the points. Then it ran hot
again. All the way up to Flagstaff (had to stop again before Flag, and yet
again *in* Flag to re-re-re-adjust the points). The rubbing block was
rubbing away.

So, it's pinging again, but otherwise, running well. I drive home. About
halfway home (in the bustling megalopolis of Camp Verde, AZ) there's no
rubbing block left. He searches frantically and scores with a replacement
set of points hiding in a case in the trunk. He sets 'em up, and they're on
the road again (but no power, and it's pinging).

It cools off when he gets home, and it runs beautifully; but I'm sure that
extended road trips will be pingers again. It is *still* running hot. Am I
looking at new, low-compression pistons? This is just unbelievably
annoying.

Thanks for your patience. For comparison, the road to Flag goes from 1700'
at Phoenix, to 4000', down to 2K, up to 4K, 5K, down to 3.5K, climbs up to
about 7500', and Flag is at about 6K.

I'm fit to be tied. Somebody tell me, I just have a whooped motor, and I'll
shut my ignorant cake-hole, and go build a new one. Either that, or tell me
what I'm doing wrong, and I'll do it.

Thank you,

James
