To be quite honest, I had never even heard of a notchback the first time I saw one, and I was in love with it before I knew it was a Volkswagen. I had seen other type III's before too, and the lines of the notch are enough different from the square and fasty that it doesn't automatically occur to you that they are related. Someone driving the singular most common aircooled Volkswagen would easily be unaware of notchbacks, much like I was. At least he recognized its beauty!
