Jim, Steven I don't mean to quibble with people that have as many answers as you do, but - I believe that 12 volts was a type 3 option before 1967, and that generator was the same smaller size as the 6 volt generator. This generator was also used on 356 Porsche, and is sometimes available from Bill and Steve's. I think the real situation is two sizes of 12 volt, but only one size 6 volt.
