Go to my web site for a look at the Fastback (the Notchback and Squareback are the same except for the rear hatch, obviously): http://www.icbm.org/erkson/ttt/ghost-page.htm >Second, why in y'alls opinions, >did VW dump the air-cooled engine after so many years of >dedication to it? Air-cooling becomes more difficult to economically produce when emission standards keep being more and more stringent and when more power is required of them. The famous Porsche 911 finally gave up the ghost on it's six-cylinder and is now water-cooled. As a side note, VW commissioned Porsche to design a low profile engine for improved cargo space and the Type 3 was the outcome. >I'm not mechanically inclined at all, so don't know, but are >they harder to work on? less reliable? poorly designed? Nope, nope, and not at all! >Do you have to be a hobbyist/mechanical >genius in order to own one or are they nice reliable little cars? A mechanical inkling in you would be very helpful but it's not a requirement. I would highly recommend that if you decide to go air-cooled you get John Muir's book, The Idiot's Guide to Volkswagens. Excellent for the beginner! >Any reason to own one over the other besides personal preference? Hauls more cargo and carries more people in comfort (with more luggage space) than the overly common Type I (the Bug). Not as flexible in terms of cargo/people/utility capacity as a Type II (the Bus) but at least it's faster and less prone to cross-wind meandyr¸O Heck, it's just a not-very-common car and that's it's biggest appeal. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Too much?
