Jeff, one great thing pop outs is that you can leave them open when you park the car in the sun, so as to help keep it from becoming an oven in your car. However, they aren't necessary for moving ventilation, on my understanding, as the later Squarebacks got flow through ventilation vents, which is probabloy why VW no longer deemed the pop-outs necessary for ventilation while driving. I don't want to say you shouldn't do this conversion; but you might want to wait a bit before starting to cut holes. Although this might be fairly simple; it could also turn into a headache, since you are more likely to get rain leaking in, on my understanding -- especially if it's mounted a bit askew. In any case -- and here I'm just guessing -- unless you are sure that you won't run out of time and energy for working on your new baby (hard to imagine when it's newly yours, but ...), it might be better to start with some of the things that really need doinsۇ- any old car has some of these needs. Are your fuel lines in tip-top shape? How about your steering links? Brake lines? Aw heck, go ahead and use the (DOT approved) braided lines if you want! : ) Sorry to be such a wet blanket. OTOH, if anyone else is interested in pop-outs, I have a pair, with old rubber but without the latches, that could be had for shipping and handling and a token sum to show your appreciation of my having saved and stored these (or just the token sum if you're going to be at Manassas). Other parts are available too, BTW.
