Read the Bentley and get VERY familiar with the test and pictures. 
Read Keith's FAQ on front axles.

A VW tie rod end puller is very useful here, and a torch, too, but I 
don't think there is any puller needed to get the torsion bar out. It 
it is rusted in place, that is another problem, and you may well need 
to take the bar/arm to a machine shop to have the rust bond broken.

This job is a lot of work.
