This is called run-on, when hot cylinders ignite leftover fuel, causing
the engine to turn over, pulling more fuel from the carb, etc., until
the cylinders cool off. Check that your automatic cutoff jets are
connected and in working order, as they prevent fuel from feeding the
phenomenon when you turn the key off. If you're using less than (US)
92-octane fuel, bite the bullet. (Lower octane = higher volatility =
easier to ignite.)
