The bias against vacuum advance distributors stems from the fact that many performance carb setups have no appropriate place to connect it to. And even if they did, the calibration (advance needed versus vacuum) would be wrong. The solution is to just get a mech adv dist. If you are using the original fuel system, the original dist, assuming it is still in good condition, is VERY hard to beat. The latest dists have both mech and vac advance; these are VERY good distributors. If you have changed your fuel system you may have little choice but to change to a new distributor. The early FI dists are actually very good for all applications, however.
