The OE Bosch coil requires no dropping resistor, but if someone has installed the incorrect coil in your car it may need one. Fumes can have many causes. The first thing to do is look for gas leaks. Then check the engine cover, hatch, and window seals. If some of these are leaking, you can draw air in the back due to the low pressure created inside the car from airflow across an open window. Driving with just the vent windows open creates a Very strong vacuum inside.
