You are pressing to hard on the drill. Also you are using a hand drill and are not holding the drill straight. Use some sort of lubricant on the bit (for cooling). A drill press would be ideal, but then you would also need a fixture to hold the piece you are drilling. Drilling can be an art unto itself. And I have the broken drill bits to prove I don't have the hang of it...
