Adjusting the idling speed won't move the point the spark gets sent to the plugs. This is done by rotating the distributor a bit, but it's not something to do without the right equipment. You must set the timing; it will tend to change a bit with wear in the distributor. If you do it (or get it done) with a timing light, and then check the static position (eg listen for the 'click' as the points open when you turn the pulley through the firing point), you could use that as a static timing point in future, at least for a few servicings. You can get cheap timing lights (3 or 4 dollars?) that work adequately in the dark Type 3 engine bay, or forŒ‰ï ore you can buy one that takes a power supply from the battery and is brighter and has a sharper flash. A repaired engine will cost rather more! Dave.
