You can probably get away with hex head bolts to replace these. I've seen
some this way and there don't appear to be any clearance problems with the
wheels. Just double check when you put the wheel o®ŒÙ½e sure it clears.

Also, if you have the right socket and breaker bar, you can loosen the big
axle nut and take of the hub with the drum. This might seem a bit radical,
but don't sweat it, as much of the vintage VW world is faced with this due
to the integral drum/hub on most other models. If you can get the drum off
this way, take it to a shop where they can put some heat on it or weld a nut
on the end of the hex bolt to get it off.
