If this is still fuel injected, then if #4 doesn't work the temp sensor stays cold and everything else runs rich, so that would explain the black plugs and smokey exhaust. You need to just concentrate on #4. Find out why it has no compression. Things to check: Were the valves adjusted correctly? Is there a valve with a sticky stem, so it doesn't fall back into place fast enough? Is there a burned valve or bad seat in #4? Is there a pulled head stud around #4 that let exhaust leak out? If the head checks out, look at the #4 rings and see if they are stuck in the ring grooves, they should move around freely. Don't get carried away. Stick to # 4 and figure out what is wrong with it. Get the Bentley manual, or the Muir if you find the Bentley too intimidating.
