What sort of pads are you talking about, the backing pad behind the
cover or is this something that actually contacts the compound?  My
buffer's backing pad is foam, the covers are terrycloth. I can also
get fleece covers, but those aren't for buffing out paint, just
waxing. As for compounds, that's why there's body shop suppliers, they
know what works best with the stuff they're selling.  It's just you
pay extra for the advice.
