OOPS!!  maybe Im reading you wrong BUT

NEVER EVER torque the front wheel bearing nut!!!!  Muir has what I think is
a very good description as to how to set the end play by moving the washer,
its how I do it.  you want zero torque on the nut and 7 ft-lbs on the allen
lock screw.

if the nut was 6 complete turns loose the bearings will be trashed, luckily
there cheap and easy to replace but even if they seem OK now you probably
be lookin at failure in the next few thousand miles.

If the greas smells THAT bad its also a warning oÄ/&Ÿing disaster, OR
really NASTY brand grease.
