I'd say first order of business is to pressure wash the bottom side to get rid of existing oil film and crud, then see where the oil is coming from. After a disasterous trip a few years back, I always replace both flywheel o-ring and the front outer case seal whenever I have the engine out for clutch maintenance. I pull the flywheel anyway for a reface when changing clutches. You could have a number of leaky spots ranging from the input shaft seal on the tranny to the seals on the tranny side covers to the drain plug. Have you checked your tranny grease level lately? That would tell you what was leaking. There's a number of things that can cause hard shifting, not all in the tranny. First gear IS synchronized, but only at very low speeds, so don't expect to do speed shifts from 4th to 1st at 50 MPH. Your shift gate plate may have slipped or need adjustment(under the boot on the shifter). This is easy to adjust and might help. You might have a worn or loose shift coupling at the front of the tranny(under a cover back there). Easy and cheap to fix. You might have a loose or missing shift rod guide bushing, This is a cheap plastic part but a bear to get in. And then you might also have a worn tranny, in which case you get to find a replacement or have it rebuilt. I was lucky enough to find a suitable tranny at a wrecking yard, about $80 exchange. Word of caution if you do this, keep your original tranny nosecone. The wrecking yard wouldn't let me have theirs and really wanted mine, not sure why. Look in Muir to see what the original rear drive ratio was for '72, I think there's a table there in the back, and get one that's similar if you go exchange. TIII ratios varied some as the years went by. On Tue, 05 Jan 1999 17:26:30 PST, you wrote: >I am a long time reader of these pages but a first time writer.
