RE: [T3] Hydraulic lifters

Hydraulic lifters use oil pressure (generated the same as for the rest of
your engine) to maintain a stable height; instead of just basically being an
adjustable shim as in solid lifters. The lifters ride on the camshaft, in
little cylindrical bores, and when the lobe comes 'round and pushes them up,
they in turn push on the push rods. The rocker is then rocked, and the
valve valves. And the wheels on the bus go round and rou... Oh, sorry. I
get off topic sometimes.

Folks here might be able to tell you better why, pro or con, but hydraulic
lifters are a little dodgy for VW's. I have only limited experience (a
buddy of mine put them on his T-1), and it sounded very much like that
million elves (or at least 700) you referred to. I have heard lots of
people complain that they don't work well. Again, people here; specifically
Toby and or Brian, may tell you which ones to use that would be better.

They are designed for two things, really; they're lower maintenance than
solid lifters (you never adjust them, until they wear out; read: start
making noise), and they're generally quieter. After initial engine build,
though, I've never had to touch a lifter.

They work differently than solid lifters do, and I'm not certain that
there's enough oil being delivered to the area to power hydraulic lifters,
at least in our cars.

Anybody?
