Go to type2.com and check the searchable archives for GEX to obtain loads of info on GEX and other rebuilders. As far as AVP engines, here's their story. They are local for me, they're in the Sacramento area. They used to be a VW shop, refined their business to rebuilding engines, heads, etc. That's all they do, I've spent some time talking to the head guy there and am personally convinced that they do the right things to the parts they build. They build stock stuff only however. They do not do hydraulics in T1 cases, big bores, etc. They only do stock. But what they do, they do right, not sloppy. They are only one of two outfits that know what they are doing with the TIV bus engines. They welded up a TIV head after a push rod boo-boo I created. Discussed expensive to cheap options, and settled on the what-would-I-do-if-it-was-mine solution. I've since sold all my Vanagons. One of the knowledgable folks on the Vanagon list (I got off last year) visited AVP in hopes of learning how to do what they do, and ended up just having AVP do the work instead. They have a website buried within a Sacramento Business website, so I thought I'd provide it: http://www.sacbiz.com/avp/index1.html If I wanted stock, this is where I'd go. I just wish they'd do a hydraulic lifter, full flow oil filter, highly balanced engine. Maybe they do, I haven't checked their website in over a year.
