My guess is that idle speed should be set when the car is warm. But how warm? A few months ago, I got back from a drive up from DC. The idle sounded like it was racing, but that was just me. It wasnt so bad, but it was at around 975. I tuned up the car three weeks ago (set dwell - new points, old points very deposited, timing, tried to get the mixture on these f**ng carbs right) and beforehand I took it out on the freeway to get it warmed up. I set the idle speed to 900 after that. My onlhy problem is that especially without the proper air control assembly, I feel like the car never gets up to proper idle speed on my usual daily commute, which is in stop and go traffic (its NYC after all). The weather is warming up here, so my question is, what can I do about this. On top of all this, I have over sensitive ears and could have sworn I heard a faint knocking at idle. I know knocking is a full load symptom but is this just that clacking of valves? My valves are .006/.006 (waiting for warmer dryer weather until I can do .004/.006) Using a long screwdriver as a stethoscope I put it over the cylinder metal and the left side was definitely louder than the right. When I put it over the engine block itself at the center, it sounded like millions of elves hitting wood blocks with tiny mallets. My big problem is I have no means of comparison. All the other T3s I've heard have been FI with stock mufflers, so they're quiet. I have these Webers and this ill-advised LeMans exhaust so the car sounds lôÐŽ/ ast in the first place (it actually sets off car alarms). I've never liked the noise because I feel like it blocks out anything I should be hearing. Anyway. Next decent weekend I'm going to look for vacuum leaks and check my coil. These, Weber says, are the 2 most probable culprits to my problems. Those problems being: a. Starting in 1st, I have to be real careful with the throttle or the car bucks. b. The car flattens out at higher rpms unless I floor it. Only then does it wake up. (You can hear this clearly with the car in Neutral and run it through it from no-to-full throttle. I feel like I'm going one-step-forward, two back. I love my car but have no faith in it, despite that it usually gets me where I need to go. And what the hell is this fabric hose leading nowhere in the right rear of the engine compartment? Help me people. -Mike, 72 SQBK, dual Weber ICT34s, 1600, Manual transmission, (no thermostat) ------------------------------------------------------------------- Unsubscribe? mailto:type3-request@vwtype3.org, Subject: unsubscribe
