I would guess that the problem lies within the shifter in the region of the lock out plate. It doesn't sound like a tranny problem at all. At most you'd have to replace the whole shifter assembly (time td茎e of those nifty shorten throw shifters found on many Dark Sider's rides ;) An easy procedure that requires about 15-30 minutes of your time.
