Hi folks, I'm Kevin in York County PA. After years of Bugs and Busses, I have fallen in love with III's. Gretchen is a '69 Squareback automatic with 60K miles, well taken care of, painted and patched in 1980, very nice but neglected for a couple years. Carbs were already on her. I removed the electric fuel pump and put on a mechanical. She has been in the garage on stands since before the first snow (salt). I have very thoroughly gone over the front end (underside) with diggers, scrapers and phosphoric acid. There was a repair already over the fuel filler. I made a repair under the brake fluid reservoir and added crud shields in front of the heater channels. No floor holes was very cool. I pulled the rear fenders and cleaned everything in there. There was a patch at the rear of the driver side heater channel. I cut that off and blew all the crap out and Extend in. The passenger side is intact so I think I'll just blow oil or acid in without cutting. I'm finishing up some patching around the middle seam of the rear wheelwells. One more thing I'd like to take care of while in the garage is a leaky transmission where the driveshaft goes in. Digging through a pile of scattrered tranny kits at a local shop, I found two seals. Can anyone confirm that one or none of these is the seal I need for this automatic before I tear into it? 018 409 399 approx 60mm od. 44mm id. 089 409 529A approx 54mm od. 36mm id. Something else I've been thinking about is hooking up a temp. gauge to the sensor that's left over from the fuel injection. I have a VDO 100-600 gauge that came from a junkyard water pumper. It has two wires for the sensor while the existing sensor has one. I haven't played with them with power yet. Has anyone done this or have any insights? Also, I'd like to find decent windshield chrome for Gretchen. It was gone when I found her. Also, Kubels to Keith Park for the rustslowing FAQ. The hours ¾Œ d will add years to many VW's. Thanks.
