Toby and All - Today's cars have an electric fuel pump shut-off switch in them as standard equipment. It is generally located behind an access panel in the trunk. The switch is very simple. It has a metal ball in it that is held in place by a permanent magnet.湉!he ball in place the electrical connection is made. When in an accident, the force of the accident causes the ball to be jarred from the magnet and the electical connection is lost. There is a button on the top of the switch that allows it to be reset. I have one around here someplace. Check the owner's manual on your new car or a friends. It will show the location of the switch since you need to reset it after even fairly minor accidents. It is a very simple way of shutting-off the power supply to the fuel pump. I am not sure if they pass the actual motor current through the switch or if they only pass some low current control signal form the brain or something. Check out the junkyards. They are probably a dime a dozen out there. If I can find mine I will try to give a better description.
