I'm not fully conversant with T-3's A/T's, but... If it's an 'experienced' transmission, there's a great deal of 'material' in solution with the trans fluid. Bits of clutch and band, that have worn off of the bands. They are kind of a continuing spiral effect. If you change the ATF every 20K, there's no problem. The longer you go without changing the fluid, though, the more particulate matter gets thrown into suspension (worn off the clutches). It gets worse and worse, and there's no real performance loss usually evident in this scenario, right up until there's a fluid loss. Then all of that lovely particulate matter goes away, and you only really have nice, shiny brass discs to try and activate your tranny. It's usually not a real good sign; but it really kind of depends on the condition of the original trans fluid. If it was nice and pink and healthy, look elsewhere. The bands could need adjustment; could be many things. If the fluid was brown-black and really smelled disgustingly sweet, you're probably hosed. -----Original Message----- From: oligeo [SMTP:oligeo@acnet.net] Sent: Thursday, February 04, 1999 10:31 AM To: type3@vwtype3.org Subject: Re: auto trans Anyone know about a/ts? heres the story; I have a 71 square auto trans. It started slipping due to low fluid. When I added fluid it started blowing smoke out of the exhaust. It turned out that the vacuum diaphram was leaking, allowing fluid to get sucked up to the carb. I changed the diaphram which stopped the fl. loss, but after about 30-50 miles it suddenly wouldn't shift out of 1st gear(won't go over 15 mph)I'm about to remove the trans for repair, but I'd like to know if its the bands or what . thanks. -----Original Message----- From: type3-d-request@vwtype3.ù¢öD e3-d-request@vwtype3.org> To: type3-d@vwtype3.org <type3-d@vwtype3.org> Date: Thursday, February 04, 1999 4:14 AM Subject: type3-d Digest V99 #62 ------------------------------------------------------------------- Too much?
