Jim's right- it's just a back-and forth motion generated by a crank arm. The motor can turn either way, as long as it parks in the right position. And from experience, it's best to park them with a fully charged battery and the engine running to ensure that the gearbox parks in the exact spot it will when you're driving. Then set the crank arm on the motor shaft. It doesn't make a BIG difference, but I HATE having the wipers up away from the bottom of the window... However, if the ARMS are for the wrong side, they could have the wrong bend in 'em- you can't flip 'em upside-down!
