If you must do it the McGiver way, you have to first jump(preferably with a toggle switch) 12V to the ignition circuit so that your ignition coil is on and then BRIEFLY jump 12V to the starter coil (with a momentary switch) or pop the clutch down a hill. It isn't hard to just fix it right. If the electronics in the switch are whats going bad you can buy just that part and its cheap, if it is the mechanical part of the switch it is more expensive but it is easier to change.

In emergencies (or when buying a car with no keys) this can be great as long as you're careful, but to depend on this kind of fix it can get risky. Keep in mind how much replacing the majority or your wiring harness or a potential wreck could cost you.

Maybe i'm getting old or something but when there is a bus heading toward you and you are searching the floor in the dark to find some little piece of wire that fell out of the connector you'll regret it.
