If it's flickering while driving, you have got a problem, assuming the oil-pressure switch isn't faulty. I thought you said it goes out when you speed up from idle, which is OK according to VW. Worn mains won't show up in compression tests, oil consumption, or even have much effect on performance until it seizes. Then you will have major problems with rebuilding, instead of just the usual replacements. They will tend to make the engine hotter as the lubrication gets worse, which then becomes a vicious circle. If your engine really does have worn mains, they won't get better by just hoping the diagnosis is wrong. ;-( You have to make sure the diagnosis is correct (ie worn enough to have the light flicker above say 1000 rpm, with an O-P switch that is known to be OK), then bite the bullet and do as much as you can afford.
