When I bought my 71 square the steering was real loose. The steering box was shot so I replaced it, and that made a lot of diference. It is still looser than I like. I checked the play on the wheels and the drivers side front rattled a little. I went to tighten the bearings. As I'm doing this (following the muir procedure) I hear scraping when I turn the wheel. I don't know if this is just the wheel scraping against the brake pads because of the new position or if it is the bearings. Both possible sources of the sound are too close to differentiate. I suspect that it is the brakes and it will go away after I stop a few times. Should I be concerned? The pads are real thin anyway. I'm going to look into some new ones anyway. My biggest fear about the loose steering is that everything is slightly off and I have to fix them all to get it as tight as I like it.
