Instead of tar, how about fiberglas gel for impregnating that cloth? I used that when I first got my square, most spots have held up for 10 years. I've had to redo several, but if you get the edges absolutely clean and put a patch on inside and outside, it holds up pretty well. The key is to get the edges down to bare metal, I was working with sandpaper and hand tools at first, so some didn't stay put, weren't clean enough. With a good power sander or DA, it shouldn't be that rough to do. The company that makes Bondo filler also puts out the fiberglas gel. Now that I've got a welding outfit, I'll be replacing those old patches with real metal.
