If I had thought ahead I would have tossed 1/4 cup of clean oil in and sloshed it around first. This is just surface rust, however and is not deep enough to affect the life of the tank nor is it thick enough to cause cloging of the filters. Still, I think I'll put some oil in there to stop it one of these days. They are stored in dry shelter, not outdoors, but not heated.
