Maybe the idle is set too low, or maybe this is just normal for your 
car. It sounds like maybe the idle drops and undershoots, which wuld 
explain both lights.

This switch would not cause this problem.

The compression on a 70 should be more like 125. That's with the 
engine warm and the throttle valve open. If the compression has been 
lowered for todays gas then 105-110 is more like it.

A 70 (MT?) should be pretty peppy. Are both your advance mechanisms 
working (especially the mech adv?) OTOH, your mileage is good, so 
that does not seem to be a problem.

One thing that you might try would be to do a running (on the road) 
fuel pressure check. The FI 28-30 psi should hold up ALL the time. If 
it drops under load then you've found your problem and probably need 
to replace your fuel filter.
