i had a similar problem i resolved a couple of weeks ago.  i had a few
problems at once, though.  i'll tell you what mine were and you can just
rule out those you are sure it isn't.

most likely:
distributor that wasn't advancing enough
incorrect timing

other stuff:
both accel. jets had fallen out, and been shot out of the exhaust at some
point.
one of the idle cut off valves was bad.
leaky carbs.
#2 exhaust to header leakage (bolts had come loose).
carb linkage (the ones on the side of the carb with the spring) adjustment.

to check the distributor, get a dynamic timing light and see how much the
advance changes on the pulley when you rev the engine.  other listees should
be able to give you better techniques and more specifics
