Marsh=> It comes straight off the engine, right? No. When your heat flaps are opened, air is diverted from the fan through the heat exchangers and into the cabin. => Is there much chance of getting exhaust or other harmful fumes? This can be caused by leaks in the system where the front (large) heat exchangers meet the muffler. Exhaust seeps out at the joint and is sucked into an exchanger that's also leaking. Your enemies here are rust in the exhaust joint and poor assembly, which allows the joint to rattle and wear.
