I don't know if anyone else has ever come across this issue.... but there is a hot VWs issue ( I'll look it up.... ) that has the plans ( actual blue prints.... with dimensions and everything ) and instructions... on how to convert an IRS rear suspension VW ( they are doing a type 1 but it would work with a type 3) to rear disc brakes.... it uses a type 3 rear hub ( machined down slightly to fit the inside of a 914 rear disk..... ) I have been wanting to do this conversion, once i find a reasonably priced set of 914 calipers ( actually I haven't been looking all that hard yet, as I have other plans that come before this.......) If anyone would want a copy of this article p-mail me and i'll find the issue.as soon as possible......
