I have had good luck with off the shelf header paint, just be sure that before you paint it, that you are painting BARE metal..... the paint that comes on aftermaket header systems is notorious for barely lasting long enough to install the system, it tends to flake off easily. have the muffler and header bead/sand blasted first, then use the header paint, make sure to put it on very lightly, almost to the point of "fogging" it on, thick coats of paint will not last as long..... I have a Gene Berg header on my 71 Squareback, the systems from him are just coated with some sort of waxy protectant, with that system i just spayed it down with brake-clean, and it was ready to paint.........
