I got this from a bike list but it still applies to our babies: First, this will only work if the engine will run. I got this tip originally >from a company that specializes in Hi-Perf parts for the Buick Turbo V-6's. Seems0ˆöe main active ingredient in STP fuel injection cleaner (and the likes) is Toluene. This is commonly sold as paint reducer in all auto paint stores and a few of the home paint shops. Sherman Williams sells it as Tolulex for $10-12 / gal. With this, you can make any concentration you desire vs. the 2-3% that STP gives you. It has the side benefit of being a mild octane boost. Some things to remember: 1. This stuff is HIGHLY flammable - be careful and put the ciggy out before working with it. 2. It is a paint reducer (thinner). If you spill some on your tank, it will be down to bare metal before you can curse. I cannot stress this enough. 3. There is usually a warning about not using it except as intended by the labeling. Some Federal statute is mentioned. First, gasoline is not pure petroleum distillates any longer. It is a chemical cocktail that has all kinds of modifiers and boosters etc. added. As gasoline sits, the highly volatile segments evaporate. This slowly reduces combustibility. In addition, the more waxy portions of the cocktail come out of suspension and deposit themselves on the container walls as varnish. This will slowly build up to the point of clogging jets and passages and plating the needles. Eventually, fuel can't flow and it you were to take the carbs apart you will typically see a brownish yellow goop. In fact, the 'reformulated' gasolines seem to be more prone to this. To prepare, I usually place a layer of shop towels on the tank and cover all the paint. A friend puts down some plastic wrap first. Fill a jar about ¸ full (easier to control) and wrap it in another towel. In your opposite hand, have still another towel to catch any potential oozes. If there are any drips, you can quickly whisk the towels off before it has a chance to soak through. Pour about one to one-and-a-half cups in a 4 gallon tank. Seems to be about a good effective mix. Fire the engine up and run it for a while. As the Toluene goes through the system, it will dissolve the varnish and burn it in the engine. OLR‹ method to pour the Toluene in the tank I prefer is a plastic type squeeze bottle. I can hold a finger over the opening and stuff it down the filler neck before letting any Toluene out. Of course, still use all the towels. Good luck, and remember it will remove paint.
