The oil pan on the Subaru is way deeper than the air-cooled engine, and a combination of a lowered type3 and a Subaru engine would probably be an invitation for problems. If I were to replace the original boxer in the type3, I would rather go for the Vanagon engine, it is the same engine as in your favorite 'back, only converted to water cooling. It is nice to keep it all VW too.
