In most cases it's a letter written to you by VW Customer Services to say when your car was made, what extras, where it was sent etc. Until recently they did this free, but have now stopped for the time being; I think they were inundated with requests. They told me that in the UK we should contact the VW (UK) at Milton Keynes, but I understand that VWoA don't have the details for USA ones. The 'certificate' I believe has the same details on a special, well, certificate! This is purchased from the VW Auto Museum for about $7. For the Ovals and Splits, you have to contact the Museum as the Customer Services dept at Wolfsburg no longer has those records. Some of the details are in factory codes, which we are gradually deciphering (now I know how those Egyptologists felt when learning what all that cuneiform writing on ancient temples meant). BTW, does the '64 wiring download properly now, Bill? Dave.
