Woohoo! Another convert.
These questions are sure to start a few arguements here... I suggest a
Squareback for daily driving, getting groceries and hauling stuff type
transportation because of all the cargo space. Try and find one that's been
restored fairly recently (unless you want to do the work yourself) then
*hopefully* you won't have to deal with major engine/tranny work, rust and
such. Now I'll step aside and let others fill in the other answers.

pee ess - my wife was offered $10k(!!!) for our Sqrbck last week by some
older woman driving a Mercedes... she declined. All I said was 'hon it's a
good thing I wasn't driving'. I could seriously live with a $3k profit on a
27 year old Volkswagen.
