There are 2 kinds of lifters that have the right metalurgy for our cams; there are MANY kinds that will NOT work properly. The OE kind are 1 piece, and another kind made in Brazil are 3 piece. Of the latter, the third piece is an internal snap ring that holds the other 2 pieces together. This snap ring is a C-shaped piece of round wire, wrapped in a partial circle ~1 cm in diameter. Gene Berg once told me that these lifters are lighter, but that the snap rings have a habit of coming out at high RPMs and slowly working their way back to the sump, through the filter screen and into the pump. I have never seen this, but might this be what you have?
